Enhance the aesthetic appeal of your garden by adding a pond!

Want to take a step closer to nature? A backyard water feature can make your dream come true! Not only water features add aesthetics to a yard, but also they provide a serene, eco-friendly and calming environment that can be enjoyed by everyone. So, if you are wondering how to incorporate water into your landscape, then there is no better way than a backyard pond. With endless designing possibilities, you can easily create a one-of-a-kind pond, which you and your whole family can enjoy. Here are some tips and techniques to help turn your dream of a backyard pond into reality.

Things you need

  • EPDM Pond Liner
  • Submersible Pump
  • Filter
  • Pebbles and Rocks
  • Underlayment
  • Fishes and Aquatic Plants
  • Skimmer
  • Waterfall Tank

Choose a Location

Once you decide to build your own pond, you have to choose a proper location on the basis of the following criteria;

  • The first and foremost thing is Sunlight. Although it is not necessary to have a pond in the sunny location, but it will increase the options for your plant life if there are six hours of sunlight every day. So, choose wisely!
  • Secondly, the filter and pump run on electricity. Thus, choose a spot that is at a reasonable distance from the power source.
  • Thirdly, for easy maintenance try to pick a location, which is far away from the trees as falling leaves can clog your beautiful pond’s filter. Moreover, your pond should be accessible from all the sides.
  • Last but not the least; check with your localities in order to ensure that you are not digging and building your pond over buried cables or lines.

Pick a Size

Do you want your pond to be too big? Or, do you want it to be small and compact? Do you want to add a fountain or waterfall to it? Generally, a water garden requires a depth of around 18 inches and more, while a fish pond needs a minimum depth of three feet. The choice is yours!

Choose a Shape

Before you begin with your digging part, verify the location of gas and electric lines in order to ensure your safety. Once the areas are marked properly, use a spray paint to properly outline your pond’s shape and ensure that all the sides are proportionate. If you have a waterfall in your plan, build up the elevation at a desired end and cascade downwards accordingly.

Start Digging

Small ponds can be excavated easily; however, for larger ponds, you might need professional equipment and assistance. Add shelves along the sides for dimension and various types of aquatic plants. Once done with the digging part, line the hole using sand to make it smooth before laying the underlayment. This will provide a cushion for your EPDM pond liner.

Insert Liner

Insert the EPDM liner with its textured side facing up and smooth side facing down. You need to ensure that the liner extends to each and every crevice and corner. Smoothen the liner in order to prevent any crease, while ensuring a loose fit.

Install Equipment

In order to ensure safe operation of the electrical equipment surrounded by water, it is highly important to hire a licensed electrician at the time of installing water pump, skimmer and filter. You can fill the pond’s bottom with boulders, gravel and rocks but be careful, it should not tear the liner.

It’s time to add Water

After the above steps are completed, fill the pond with water to its desired level. You should add a de-chlorinating agent in order to remove the residual chemicals and allow it to settle for 24 hours. Follow the directions label of the chemical so that your fishes and plants do not get harmed.

Accessorize your Dream Pond

At first, add some aquatic plants to the pond. Wait at least two to three weeks before the nutrient cycles begin. After observing the patterns, add fish and enjoy!
